How to Tell If Your Torque Wrench Is Out of Calibration

A torque wrench is a precision tool, but over time, even the best ones lose accuracy. If your wrench is out of calibration, it can lead to over-tightening or under-tightening, causing mechanical failures, safety risks, and costly repairs. But how can you tell if your torque wrench isn’t applying torque correctly?

Here are some key warning signs that it’s time for a professional calibration.

1. Fasteners Are Coming Loose or Breaking

If bolts or nuts are loosening after proper tightening, your wrench may be under-torquing. On the other hand, if fasteners keep stripping or breaking, it might be over-torquing, applying too much force. Either issue suggests your torque wrench is out of calibration.

2. Inconsistent Torque Readings

Does your wrench give different torque readings for the same setting? If you feel like the force required varies from use to use, there’s a good chance the internal mechanism has worn down or lost accuracy.

3. Stiff or Loose Adjustments

If the torque setting dial is too stiff or too loose, it can cause incorrect readings. A well-calibrated wrench should adjust smoothly without resistance or excessive play.

4. The “Click” or Digital Readout Feels Off

For mechanical wrenches, the click should be distinct and precise when reaching the set torque. If the click feels weak, late, or doesn’t happen at all, calibration is likely off. For digital torque wrenches, erratic readouts or slow response times signal a problem.

5. You Haven’t Calibrated It in Over a Year

Most manufacturers recommend calibrating your torque wrench every 5,000 cycles or at least once a year—whichever comes first. If you’ve been using your wrench daily without recalibrating, it’s time for a check-up.
